Girls Skateboarding In Afghanistan – Skateistan

It’s a genuine pleasure to come across images that are both incongruous and heart warming in equal measure. Below are some pictures and a video about a not-for-profit NGO called Skateistan that teaches youngsters in Afghanistan skateboarding.

These children of Kabul have known nothing but the inside of a war zone. The population has exploded and children are the in the vast majority since fighting killed off a horrible percentage of the grownups.

This charitable school gives them the opportunity to take mainstream education with a side salad of skateboarding.

Forty percent of the students are girls, they relish in the activity because it’s illegal for them to ride a bike, so this sense of freedom is a real pleasure.

The Skateistan school caters for kids from 5 to 18, half of which are street workers.

Skateistan now have a school in Cambodia, too which is going great guns.
