Nice Twitter Visual – Coloured By Language

Twitter Users Language Map - Key Large

Someone called Kalev Leetaruv who’s into “big data” collated 1.5bn tweets which were streamed from 71.3m unique users across the space of a month. They then colour coded them for the language the tweet was written in. I don’t know why, and I don’t know why it matters, but they’ve done it now. And they produced these lovely images (click image to enlarge it a tad.)

Unsurprisingly English was the most used language, accounting for 38% of the total, Spanish was second with 11% and Portuguese got third place with 6%. European countries are nicely delineated in this close up:

In this next one you can see the blue of South Korea sitting underneath a dead black mass of North Korea where virtually no one is allowed on the internet and China on the left is pretty bleak too but they have their own social media. As an aside, China quite often uses VPN technology to mask their whereabouts so it’s not an entirely true picture. Pink Japan is tweeting crazy though:
